Remaking the Sustainable Development Goals: relational Indigenous epistemologies

Abstract While the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were inclusive in their design, reliance on official measurement infrastructures has upheld narrow definitions of both terms sustainability and development. Indigenous non-Indigenous “governance beyond state” approaches call these into question. They highlight that disaggregated data are unable to fully reflect alternative grounds aspirations living sustainably with environment non-human world. Relational epistemologies practices contribute epistemic infrastructures. In this paper, three examples from Andean-Pacific region provide an lens through which reconceptualize remake SDG landscape. Together suite cases highlights importance bottom-up articulation processes, knowledge inclusion, harmonization for operationalizing SDGs. particular, we urgent need renegotiate relationship between communities global infrastructure order pursue realize goals.
